The Giclee UNEQUAL MARRIAGE 2.0

This work continues Masha Yankovskaya’s exploration of relationship between men and women and refers back to her earlier painting Unequal Marriage, which in turn draws on the work of the same title by Vasily Pukirev, depicting inequality in relationship.

Unequal Marriage 2.0 shows a new model of contemporary relationship — an intentional union based on freedom of choice and mutual agreement. A man braiding a woman’s hair becomes a deep symbol. On one hand, it embodies control: the woman’s state is literally in his hands — his movement may cause pain, and the integrity depends on him. On the other hand, braiding hair is an act of care and service, echoing a traditional pre-wedding ritual associated with transition, protection, and fertility. The infinite length of the hair conveys an inexhaustible feminine energy that is quite literally held in the hands of her partner.

Thus, Unequal Marriage 2.0 offers a contemporary perspective on the model of relationship between men and women in today’s world.
